This article provides an overview of economic globalization in the modern period. It includes an overview of the main phases of the history of globalization, as well as of radical structural breaks. It also discusses important topics such as the reasons for the growth of European long-distance trade in the Early Modern period, the customary explanations for the so-called first wave of globalization in the middle decades of the 19th century, and the reasons for the emergence of the so-called "Third World". Additionally, the article discusses endogenous factors leading to the end of the first phase of globalization in the first third of the 20th century, the global economic aspects of the global economic crisis of 1929–1932, as well as the reasons why the Bretton Woods system (1944/1958–1973) was ultimately short-lived.

European politics in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries were dominated by warfare. This article considers the sources of the conflict and the ways in which alliances to counter the power of Louis XIV were formed and maintained. Although a general desire to minimise French influence was evident, states had a variety of motives for joining alliances. Participation often came at a price. The difficulties of maintaining a united front were most frequently apparent at the end of conflicts. Peacemaking also highlighted where power within the alliances really lay.

In 1918, President Wilson's support for a new international system offered the first practical opportunity to create a universal organisation of states pledged to non-violent diplomacy. This article explores some of the earlier theory and practice of collective security schemes designed to eliminate war, some of which contributed to the evolution of the League of Nations. It analyses the structure of the League before investigating the role of this potentially revolutionary development in the diplomacy of the inter-war period. The "Great Experiment" failed, overwhelmed by the aggression of the dictators, but it was replaced, in 1945, by the United Nations.

Peace processes shaped political and social transformations in pre-modern Europe on many levels. At the core of these peace processes was the negotiation and implementation of legal structures for the non-violent resolution of conflict, and these processes can be observed from the interpersonal level of social interaction up to the relationships between states. They were directly connected with core processes of the pre-modern era that affected each other: state-formation (domestic, urban and general peace), confessionalization (religious peace) and globalization (diplomacy), each with its own different forms of norm-formation and institutionalized practices, which in the event of conflict were supposed to enable communication and lead to legally defined rules. Rooted in the Christian ethics of peace and in common law, these processes were also the subject of intensive Europe-wide media reflection.

"Postcolonial studies" denotes a loosely defined inter-disciplinary field of perspectives, theories and methods that deal with the non-material dimensions of colonial rule and, at the same time, postulates the deconstruction of colonial discourses and thought patterns that continue to exert an influence up into the present. One of the reasons for the importance of this current for European history is that its adherents define colonialism as a cluster of reciprocal relationships that has shaped not only the colonised regions, but also the European metropole. In addition, the nuanced methodological and theoretical apparatus developed by "postcolonial studies" to describe and analyse asymmetrical power constellations and hierarchical modes of representation in colonial contexts can also be transferred to primarily internal European questions (for example, gender relationships or class conflicts).

This article explores how the use of alliances and treaties changed along with the developments in the European international order in the modern era. Fundamentally, European international relations remained based on an "anarchic" system of competing sovereign states. Yet the evolution of concepts of international law from the Renaissance onwards and the impact of cultural, political, and social developments has encouraged a use of treaties and alliances that has moved European politics fitfully towards a "constitutional" solution, while never fully embracing such a model.

Early on, the USA – "America" – became a point of reference within European consciousnesses against which European societies could analyse themselves. At the same time, America acted as a repository for new models which Europe studied in order to discover whether they could be exported. This article discusses European perceptions of America from the 17th century onwards and some of the types of models created. A review of "Americanisation" – much discussed in the 20th century – follows, offering an opportunity to investigate the limits of the transferability of these models.

This article reconstructs the expansion of Europe overseas and the multiple forms of encounters between European navigators, explorers, conquerors, colonizers, merchants and missionaries and "other" peoples and cultures over the course of four centuries. There has always been a double aspect to such encounters. At an immediate and practical level, conquest, colonization and trade led to modes of domination or coexistence and multi-faceted transcultural relationships. In Europe, such encounters with "otherness" led to attempts to explain and interpret the origins and nature of racial and cultural (linguistic, religious and social) diversity. At the same time, observation of alien societies, cultures and religious practices broadened the debate on human social forms, leading to a critical reappraisal of European Christian civilization.

The relationship between the Ottomans and the Christians did not evolve around continuous hostility and conflict, as is generally assumed. The Ottomans employed Christians extensively, used Western know-how and technology, and encouraged European merchants to trade in the Levant. On the state level, too, what dictated international diplomacy was not the religious factors, but rather rational strategies that were the results of carefully calculated priorities, for instance, several alliances between the Ottomans and the Christian states. All this cooperation blurred the cultural boundaries and facilitated the flow of people, ideas, technologies and goods from one civilization to another.

By the 16th century at the latest, Istanbul had become a hub of early modern diplomacy that radiated to points far beyond Europe. The capital of the Ottoman Empire, which stretched over three continents, was a gateway for east-west trade and communication routes and thus at the same time an important site of transcultural integration and cross-border politics. If there was anything like a "diplomatic world capital" in the early modern era, it was arguably Istanbul rather than Vienna or Versailles. In any case, the capital of the Ottoman Empire was a dynamic testing ground for transcultural diplomatic procedures and practices, which provided essential impulses to the development of modern diplomacy.
