"Science" is a key concept of modern culture. It is characterized in a unique way both by the adherence to strict principles and by a large degree of openness. Science produces knowledge that is supposed to meet the highest epistemological standards, while at the same time science is undergoing constant change and transformation. The history of science, the history of the concept of science, and the influence of science in history, therefore, can only be understood by investigating the interconnectedness of the field of science with concepts and practices that serve to delimit this field. The sciences and their genesis have to be studied together with the institutional contexts of universities, academies, societies, journals and conferences, in which science has been conducted and institutionalised. These concepts and practices are themselves subject to historical processes. The nature and function of science has to be investigated as a complex history of differentiation and interconnection, which is described in broad outlines in this article.

"Wissenschaft" ist ein Schlüsselbegriff insbesondere moderner kultureller Konstellationen, der in eigentümlicher Weise zugleich durch strikte Verbindlichkeit und durch eine große Offenheit gekennzeichnet ist: Wissenschaft produziert Wissen, das den striktesten erkenntnistheoretischen Standards genügen soll, zugleich aber verändert sich Wissenschaft ständig. Die Geschichte und Begriffsgeschichte von Wissenschaft ebenso wie der Einfluss von Wissenschaft in der Geschichte lassen sich deshalb nur begreifen, wenn dieser Begriff in seiner Verwobenheit mit – sich historisch ebenfalls wandelnden – Phänomenen zur abgrenzenden Festlegung von Wissenschaft und zusammen mit den Bedingungen ihrer institutionellen Fixierung in Universitäten, Akademien und Gesellschaften, Zeitschriften oder Konferenzen untersucht wird: Wissenschaft erhält ihre Form und Funktion in einer komplexen Geschichte von Abgrenzungen und Vernetzungen, die in diesem Beitrag in Grundzügen umrissen wird.

For some, the governesses of the 19th century were supposedly melancholic and prim wallflowers. For others, they were a worldly generation of women with professional ambitions. Strict, grim-looking women emerge from childhood memories no less than women who were dynamic teachers and opened up new horizons – not only for their pupils, but also for themselves. The fact that their paths not only took them to foreign households, but increasingly to foreign lands – i.e that they were more and more part of a pan-European labor market – is especially evident towards the end of the 19th century. How did the widely travelled governesses cope with the women's ideal of their time? Why did they increasingly aspire to go abroad? Did they stimulate international relational history (Beziehungsgeschichte) and thus contribute to cultural transfer? How did the interplay between international openness and nationalistic constraints evolve in the course of the 19th century? What led to the decline of the governesses career at the beginning of the 20th century? This article examines these questions by looking at young women's personal testimonies as well as other contemporary publications, with an emphasis on German, English and French variants.

Wer kennt nicht die abenteuerlichen Geschichten von Forschungsreisenden und Entdeckern, die mutig in See stachen, um unter harten Entbehrungen der Wahrheit und der Aufklärung zu dienen? Der Titel dieses Beitrags, "Wissens- und Wissenschaftstransfer", und die Tatsache, dass er u.a. im Thread "Europa und die Welt" einsortiert ist, mögen sowohl solche Assoziationen hervorrufen als auch die notwendigen Gegenreaktionen: Denn diese Klischees, tief im kulturellen Gedächtnis Europas verwurzelt, sind inzwischen gründlich hinterfragt und durch differenziertere Vorstellungen von Wissenstransfer ersetzt worden. Dieser Artikel skizziert zum einen die Geschichte dieses Wandels; zum anderen bietet er einige Orientierungshilfen für die Beschäftigung mit Wissens- und Wissenschaftstransfer. Beleuchtet werden nicht nur die relevanten Begrifflichkeiten und die mit dem Thema verbundenen historischen Grenzziehungen, sondern auch eine erweiterte Perspektive auf vielfältige Phänomene des Wissenstransfers, die über den engeren Begriff des "Wissenschaftstransfers" hinausgeht. Als zentraler Impulsgeber der neueren Literatur zum Thema wird die postkoloniale Theorie mit ihren methodologischen Konsequenzen vorgestellt. Als Ausgangs- und Abgrenzungspunkt dient George Basallas Modell des Wissenschaftstransfers.

Die einen sehen in den Gouvernanten im 19. Jahrhundert die vermeintlich melancholisch-prüden Mauerblümchen, andere eine weltgewandte Frauengeneration mit professionellen Ambitionen. Strenge, verhärmte Frauen tauchen in den Kindheitserinnerungen ebenso auf wie dynamische Lehrerinnen, die Horizonte öffneten – nicht nur für ihre Schüler, sondern auch für sich selbst. Dass sie ihre Wege nicht nur in fremde Haushalte, sondern immer öfter auch in fremde Länder führten, sich also Gouvernanten zunehmend auf einem gesamteuropäischen Arbeitsmarkt bewegten, lässt sich vor allem gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts beobachten. Wie vertrugen sich die weit gereisten Gouvernanten mit dem Frauenideal ihrer Zeit? Warum strebten sie immer mehr ins Ausland? Gaben sie Impulse zu einer internationalen Beziehungsgeschichte und trugen somit zum Kulturtransfer bei? Wie gestaltete sich das Wechselspiel zwischen internationaler Öffnung und nationalistischer Beschränktheit im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts? Was führte zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhundert zum Ende der Gouvernantenkarrieren? Diesen Fragen geht der Artikel nach, indem er auf die Selbstzeugnisse der jungen Frauen ebenso wie auf andere zeitgenössische Publikationen schaut, mit Akzent auf deutsche, englische und französische Varianten.

We are all familiar with stories of the daring voyages of discoverers and researchers who braved the seas and severe privation in the service of truth and enlightenment. The title of this article, "Knowledge Transfer and Science Transfer", and the fact that it is included in the "Europe and the World" thread may conjure up similar images but hopefully also the counter reaction: these clichés, which are deeply rooted in the cultural memory of Europe, have lately been fundamentally questioned and replaced by more nuanced concepts of knowledge transfer. On the one hand, this article sketches the history of this change; and, on the other hand, it offers some general principles for approaching the topic of knowledge transfer and science transfer. The article not only discusses the relevant concepts and the historical delineations associated with the topic, but provides a broader perspective including diverse phenomena of knowledge transfer which go beyond the more limited concept of "science transfer". As the primary impetus for more recent literature on the topic, postcolonial theory and its methodological implications are also discussed. Here George Basalla's model of knowledge transfer is taken as the starting and focal point.

Prior to the 19th century, poetry, rhetoric, historiography and moral philosophy were considered particularly valuable to humane education, as they transmitted knowledge of beauty, goodness and truth. These so-called "fine sciences" ("schöne Wissenschaften") were discredited by Immanuel Kant, who no longer recognised values as objects of scientific knowledge. Kant advanced an ideal of "rigorous science" entailing a novel concept of "scientific education" ("wissenschaftliche Bildung"): through methodically exploring the harmonious totality of human knowledge, the human mind would take on a correspondingly harmonious form. In the course of the 19th century, the disciplinary differentiation and specialisation that resulted from the new concept of rigorous science proved ever more difficult to reconcile with the educational ideal that had once been its motivating force.

Intellectual and academic networks in the period 1450 to 1800 were structured by diverse connections between persons, including letters, and by academic institutes. Network studies reveal the hierarchical structures, as well as the intertwining of academic and learned networks. The emergence of the so-called Republic of Letters coincided with the expansion of the printing press and the quadruplicating of universities. Intellectual networks thrived and academic mobility increased, influenced by political, economic, and religious factors. The 18th century saw a decline in overall student mobility but scholarly exchange remained crucial, setting the stage for the modern international scientific community.
