Performances of William Shakespeare's plays on the European continent date back to his lifetime. Since his death in 1616, the playwright has never stopped dominating European literature. His Complete Works have gone through an incredible number of editions from the 18th century onwards. During the second half of the 18th century, he was translated into French and German. Yet in Southern Europe it was not until the 19th century that spectators became genuinely acquainted with his plays. In the 20th century, artists started to engage with the cultural traditions of Shakespeare in a variety of ways. By the 1980s, the playwright had not only become enrolled in the ranks of postcolonial critique, but he was also part and parcel of a European theatrical avant-garde. In today's Europe, newly created festivals as well as Shakespearean adaptations on screen continue to provide challenging interpretations of his plays.

The earthquake that laid waste to Portugal's capital city Lisbon on 1 November 1755 shook the West as severely as almost no other earthquake has before or since. This was not only because of the immense destruction it caused and the tens of thousands of lives it claimed, but because the event also affected European thinking over the long term by undermining the philosophical optimism of the Enlightenment, the belief in divine providence and the conviction of living in the best of all possible worlds. This earthquake initiated a sustained discourse on catastrophe with a broad resonance in the printed media, philosophy, literature and art. The event also imprinted itself on later perceptions of earthquakes and natural disasters up to the present.

Europe is a continent of great linguistic and cultural differences, and Europeans have always been conscious of linguistic diversity. The distribution of languages is extremely uneven. In the regions where the number of indigenous languages is relatively small (western Europe), we encounter the largest number of immigrant languages. In eastern Europe, on the other hand, the number of indigenous languages is considerably larger, but the number of immigrant languages is considerably smaller than in western Europe. The concentration of languages is largest at the periphery in the Caucasus region. In this region, more than 50 languages are spoken, which belong to a half-dozen language families. From the perspective of historical linguistics, the history of Europe is the history of its Indo-Europeanization. The area of distribution of languages of other language families has contracted continuously as increasing numbers of speakers of these languages have been assimilated over a long period of time.

A Transcultural History of Europe – Perspectives from the History of Migration

At heart, a transcultural history of Europe examines the topic of cultural transfer, above all those cultural assets tied up with identity (i.e. Kultureme). These Kultureme have drawn on a multiplicity of cultures including the ancient world, the three main religions of Europe (Judaism, Christianity and Islam), a number of regional and local cultural spaces, and the variations within these cultures that have emerged over the centuries. Numerous physical, intellectual and social sites created Kultureme that were transferred within Europe, for example, metropolises and court artists. The agents of cultural transfer and thus of transcultural history were ethnic or other social, religious, professional etc. groups. Among these, ethnic migration was predominant until about 1000 AD. From 1000 AD to the early 19th century, other forms, such as economic, demographic, professional and seasonal migration, were important. Since the 19th century, ethnic cleansing has played an increasingly important role, which, ran counter to transcultural history. This effect has been offset by immigration from the (former) colonial regions.

"Postcolonial studies" denotes a loosely defined inter-disciplinary field of perspectives, theories and methods that deal with the non-material dimensions of colonial rule and, at the same time, postulates the deconstruction of colonial discourses and thought patterns that continue to exert an influence up into the present. One of the reasons for the importance of this current for European history is that its adherents define colonialism as a cluster of reciprocal relationships that has shaped not only the colonised regions, but also the European metropole. In addition, the nuanced methodological and theoretical apparatus developed by "postcolonial studies" to describe and analyse asymmetrical power constellations and hierarchical modes of representation in colonial contexts can also be transferred to primarily internal European questions (for example, gender relationships or class conflicts).

In recent decades, Italian cuisine has had a greater impact upon the development of eating habits than any other national cuisine. Spaghetti, pizza, tiramisù und espresso are ubiquitous in Europe and North America. This article reconstructs the reception of Italian cuisine in Europe, identifying and separating the complex tangle of factors that contributed to it. These included the image of Italy in art and literature, the movements of tourists and migrants, the role – which for a long time has generally been ignored – of the Italian state in promoting foreign trade and the economy, and the impact of epidemiology.

As a communication medium, the world's fairs of the 19th century were the contemporary equivalent of the present-day world wide web. Given their enormous attendance figures, which far exceeded the reach of all other media, the historical significance of international exhibitions can hardly be overstated. From the opening of the "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations" in London in May 1851 onward, large expositions were held periodically in almost all major cities. The aim was to present to an international audience a miniature version of the world that was as true to scale as possible, present only for a limited time at a clearly defined site within the ever-changing host city. This article gives an overview of the historical development of this 19th century mass- and meta-medium, describes its most significant forms, functions and effects, and discusses the extent to which world's fairs in Europe have decreased in impact since the beginning of the 20th century.

It has traditionally been assumed that the influence of Islam on Western jurisprudence was far less than on natural sciences, philosophy and even theology. Since the Middle Ages, the development of a jurisprudence increasingly emancipated from theology, and the separate development of the two learned laws (Roman law and Canon law) have been among those characteristics of occidental society which clearly delimit it from the Islamic World. Nevertheless, Europe has an Islamic legal history as well. The influences of Islam on European legal history were on the one hand territorial: in those parts of Europe which were at some time in their history under Islamic rule, and on the other hand factual, especially – due to economic interests – in commercial law. Furthermore, there is an ongoing academic debate whether theoretical-methodological concepts were adopted as well.

The actual integration process that began with the creation of the OEEC (Organisation for European Economic Co-operation) in 1948 has constantly been accompanied by discussions about concepts of Europe. At the heart of these discussions was the question of federalism between states – as opposed to federalism within a state. This article investigates this debate with a focus on its early decades. Beyond these discussions, it becomes apparent that the actual development of a structure resembling a confederation of states has increasingly assumed aspects of a federal state and the future remains open in all directions.

In historical studies, the Black Sea region is viewed as a separate historical region which has been shaped in particular by vast migration and acculturation processes. Another prominent feature of the region's history is the great diversity of religions and cultures which existed there up to the 20th century. The region is understood as a complex interwoven entity. This article focuses on the northern Black Sea region, which in the present day is primarily inhabited by Slavic people. Most of this region currently belongs to Ukraine, which has been an independent state since 1991. It consists primarily of the former imperial Russian administrative province of Novorossiia (not including Bessarabia, which for a time was administered as part of Novorossiia) and the Crimean Peninsula, including the adjoining areas to the north. The article also discusses how the region, which has been inhabited by Scythians, Sarmatians, Greeks, Romans, Goths, Huns, Khazars, Italians, Tatars, East Slavs and others, fitted into broader geographical and political contexts.

Seit der Eröffnung der Londoner "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations" im Mai 1851 wurden große Ausstellungen periodisch in fast allen Metropolen der westlichen Welt abgehalten.

Between the 18th and the 20th century, Alpine peaks were explored and conquered for completely different reasons by equally different groups of actors. They each contributed, however, to the Alpine tourism industry we know today. Simultaneously, there were interactions and intra- and intercultural transfers between "foreigners" and "locals".
