The new state's norms and values were primarily established in the founding years of the Turkish Republic. Kemalism was the driving force behind Turkey's nationalization and state-building process. It was the product and further development of a course of nationalization that had its roots in the Ottoman Empire and the ideas and utopias originating in Europe. Atatürk and the Turkish state elite formed their own national concepts from these ideas and translated them in Kemalism into political action. Kemalism was intended to accomplish the transformation from empire to republic, replacing Islam as the "social glue" with a robust Turkish nationalism.

Human beings in pre-modern Europe were intensely mobile, despite restrictions in many places, such as those due to serfdom. On a seasonal or permanent basis, highly qualified craftsmen and ordinary workers moved to regions with higher wages, while merchants sought out more lucrative sales markets. Regional conditions thus brought about the development of certain migration systems. Mobility, however, is not always an indication of freedom. The authorities often moved serfs and convicts to remote locations, e.g. for infrastructure projects. Poverty reduced many people to wandering beggars and day laborers with inferior legal status. In these phenomena, modernity and pre-modernity are mirrored in a striking way.

Empires and "composite states" were pre-modern dominions characterised by a high degree of political, administrative, economic, judicial and cultural heterogeneity. This was the rule rather than the exception in early modern Europe. However, scholarship has so far tended to consider these two forms of rule separately. In this context, the cases of Spain and Sweden – both pre-modern states displaying a "composite" character and imperial tendencies – can serve to exemplify the plurality of guises under which such dominions might appear. In so doing, they underscore the need for transregional and transnational approaches capable of identifying the reciprocal processes of interaction, transfer and reception at play here.

To operate efficiently, armed forces require physical separation from civilian society, achieved usually through the employment of mercenaries, conscription and the provision of discrete military accommodation. War became more "popular" during the religious conflicts between 1520 and 1648 diluting civil-military distinctions but the advent of regular, uniformed, professional armies in the second half of the 17th century re-established clearer segregation. The adoption of compulsory, male, military service during the 19th and 20th centuries again brought the military and the civil into closer contact. Since 1991 small, professional, more cost-effective forces have gradually replaced mass conscript armies thus re-sharpening the civil-military divide.

Throughout European history monarchs, states, and governments have claimed the right to select men and force them to serve in the military. Modern conscription, whereby all the young men (and later sometimes also women) under the jurisdiction of a state were liable for military service and a selection of them was taken into the armed forces each year, emerged in France in 1798 with the "loi Jourdan" during the French Revolutionary Wars (1792–1801). This article explores the ideas about conscription, and their communication and introduction across Europe during and after the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815), as well as discussing its history afterwards.

Chloroform, telegraphy, steamships and precision rifles were among the "modern" features of the Crimean War (1853–1856). As the war was observed by numerous press reporters, illustrators and photographers, who sent their text and image reportage to the public back home, it can also be considered the first media war in history. Modern communications technologies enabled events to be reported on almost simultaneously. Reporting was therefore no longer a recording of completed processes after the event, but played an active role in shaping events. To satisfy illustrators and correspondents, both the military and civilian events of the war were carefully stage-managed by those in charge, which made the Crimean War aesthetically attractive, if not spectacular. Traditional historiography with its focus on written sources has thus far ignored this.

During the course of the First World War, the armed forces involved increasingly attempted to construct individual incidents of the war as media events in an effort to use them to influence the course of the war overall. This gave rise to narratives that were, to a degree, in competition with each other, although they were based on the same occurrences. This phenomenon is illustrated below via the example of the Battle of Jutland, a naval battle of the conflict. The First World War, it is argued, was not a single media event, but was constructed in the form of multiple media events – even though propaganda experts on the Allied side and German right-wing nationalist circles on the other side retrospectively attempted to re-construct the conflict as a whole as having been shaped by the media, and thus as 'one' media event.

The Young Men's Christian Association is one of the largest and oldest youth movements in the world. From the perspective of organisation studies, the YMCA can be seen as a "successful organisation", since it has not changed its mission while expanding and extending its membership and clientele. This article focuses on how the YMCA emerged and how expansion to different parts of the world modified its activities.

In 1918, President Wilson's support for a new international system offered the first practical opportunity to create a universal organisation of states pledged to non-violent diplomacy. This article explores some of the earlier theory and practice of collective security schemes designed to eliminate war, some of which contributed to the evolution of the League of Nations. It analyses the structure of the League before investigating the role of this potentially revolutionary development in the diplomacy of the inter-war period. The "Great Experiment" failed, overwhelmed by the aggression of the dictators, but it was replaced, in 1945, by the United Nations.

The relationship between the Ottomans and the Christians did not evolve around continuous hostility and conflict, as is generally assumed. The Ottomans employed Christians extensively, used Western know-how and technology, and encouraged European merchants to trade in the Levant. On the state level, too, what dictated international diplomacy was not the religious factors, but rather rational strategies that were the results of carefully calculated priorities, for instance, several alliances between the Ottomans and the Christian states. All this cooperation blurred the cultural boundaries and facilitated the flow of people, ideas, technologies and goods from one civilization to another.

Warfare was one of the few experiences between 1453 and 1789 that almost every European had in common. Although new causes and technologies emerged during this period there were also strong continuities, and although it caused death and destruction warfare could also act as a powerful force for cultural transfers. Warfare drove both temporary and permanent migrations in Europe and beyond as military professionals, conscripts and volunteers followed the drum, bringing new styles of warfare and technology with them. New and classical texts on warfare circulated freely under the intellectual influence of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, while the growth of literacy and the public sphere across Europe facilitated the public and private transmission of news and information. States developed new capabilities to maintain professional soldiers and supported military education and research. During this period warfare therefore acted as a crucial vector for cultural transfer in Europe.

During the transition from early-modern societies to the nation states of the 19th and 20th centuries, the formation of the territorial state performed an important function. The combining of dominions to form a geographical and political unit could occur through the annexation of the weaker territory by the stronger one, but it could also occur with the mutual agreement of the political decision-makers of both territories. In the case of a union, a distinction emerged very early on between a real union and a personal union (or union of crowns). While in a real union agreements under international law were equally binding for both partners, the personal union assumed a special status, in which the person of the ruler was the only connection between the two states. However, this strictly legal definition only applied to the political institutions. Below the state level, there were forms of transfer that could give a personal union a special, transnational character. Academic opinion remains divided on the extent to which these connections, which are referred to using the term "composite statehood", constitute a Europe-wide development.

European politics in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries were dominated by warfare. This article considers the sources of the conflict and the ways in which alliances to counter the power of Louis XIV were formed and maintained. Although a general desire to minimise French influence was evident, states had a variety of motives for joining alliances. Participation often came at a price. The difficulties of maintaining a united front were most frequently apparent at the end of conflicts. Peacemaking also highlighted where power within the alliances really lay.

Over the last five centuries, Russia and Europe have been closely interconnected politically, economically and culturally. Particularly from the 18th century onward, the relationship between Russia and other European countries and societies extended beyond dynastic links, political alliances, economic trade and individual cultural transfers. The relationship between Russia and Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries was characterized by a high degree of cultural interconnection. Over the past three centuries, Russia and Europe were observed and commented upon in relation to one another in travelogues, the press, literature, the philosophy of history and historiography. Thus, comparisons between the two regions must be incorporated into a history of reciprocal perceptions and interactions.

The article traces the evolution of the treatment of prisoners of war and the emergence of the modern, legally codified prisoners regime. It argues that the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars were a turning point in the history of prisoners of war. With the nationalization of war long-established practices such as the release of prisoners on parole, the exchange of prisoners and the pressing of prisoners into the captor’s armed forces were no longer politically feasible. The creation of the legally codified prisoners regime that started in the nineteenth century was a reaction to this breakdown of the traditional rules and customs.

Decolonization is a central historical trend. Occurring in four broad phases from 1776 up to 1991, it has shaped the present-day global system of states through the release of revolutionary forces. The term "decolonization" refers to the process through which colonial rule dissolved, and it encompasses the various political, economic, cultural and social dimensions of this process both in the periphery and in the metropole. For more than 200 years, decolonization has linked the history of Europe with that of the other four continents in significant ways, and it continues to influence the relationship between the European continent and the rest of the world right up to the present.

Beginning in the early modern age, European settler colonies were founded first beyond the Atlantic Ocean and later in the Pacific, but not in Asia. The territories in question are huge, and settlement often proceeded frontier-style, though processes of urbanization can also be observed from an early stage. With the exception of the Cape Colony, founded in 1652, settler colonies in Africa were not established until the 19th century and led to the dominance of European minorities over the indigenous majority population. Conflicts with local populations erupted over resources claimed by both sides, above all land. The decolonization of settler colonies in Africa was mostly accompanied by armed conflict.

This article explores how the use of alliances and treaties changed along with the developments in the European international order in the modern era. Fundamentally, European international relations remained based on an "anarchic" system of competing sovereign states. Yet the evolution of concepts of international law from the Renaissance onwards and the impact of cultural, political, and social developments has encouraged a use of treaties and alliances that has moved European politics fitfully towards a "constitutional" solution, while never fully embracing such a model.

The emergence of colonial migration circuits between Europe and Asia followed the ascendency of European mercantile and military power. In the early 19th century, the European presence in Asia was still extremely modest and very much involved in intra-Asian migration and trading circuits. From the 1820s onward, commodity production for the European markets took off, both in India and Java, and was accompanied by an increasing military presence. Military veterans contributed to a rapid growth of European colonial settlements decades before the migration of European civilians to Asia became substantial. The early 20th century marked the final phase and the heyday of the colonial migration circuits. In those years, the colonial economies and administrations required many thousands of skilled Europeans. A substantial number of these were children or grandchildren of other Europeans who had made the journey to the East generations before. This circuit was as much a product of Asian-born Europeans, as of metropolitan Europeans. This article focuses on comparisons and connections between British and Dutch migration circuits with Asia.

The French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars represented continuity in European diplomacy from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, but witnessed considerable change in the way that war was waged. The influence of Revolutionary and Napoleonic France depended on the nature of its relationship with the other European states. Satellite states were transformed considerably, whereas allied and client states experienced only a degree of ideological and practical transformation. French territorial objectives from 1792 to 1807 followed a relatively traditional pattern, seeking either direct or indirect influence in central Europe and the Italian states. The eventual response to Napoleonic hegemony was the understanding that cooperative efforts outweighed individual interests in order to bring the wars to a conclusion. The result was victory over Napoleon and the creation of a new diplomatic system that incorporated individual interest into a balance-of-power system.

The League of Nations was the first international organisation to unite as many important fields as possible of human life under one roof. Yet, as well as standing for a number of innovations that smoothed the path for the work of the United Nations and established the League of Nations as a participant in the processes of globalisation, it embodies European rivalries, the continued existence of colonial structures, and the inviolability of national rights of sovereignty. This article sketches this double aspect of the League of Nations by portraying the significance of the League of Nations and the role of Europe.

This article discusses the historiography and methods of historical borderlands research, as well as research trends in this area. The first section describes development in this research area to date, as well as the historiography of borders and border regions, and it argues that the political events of 1989 and the significant reorientation in historical studies which followed it –concerning cultural history and microhistory, for example – promoted the emergence of borderlands research in the two decades after 1989. The second section gives an overview of the methodology, focusing on semantic aspects and various types and stages of borders. Discussing various historiographical questions and trends, the final section argues in favour of a transcultural approach to the study of borders in modern European historical research.

The "Italian Model" or "Modèle italien" is perhaps the oldest and most common in our received tradition of writing histories of this type of narrative because Fernand Braudel published his history of the Italian Renaissance in French under the title "Le modèle italien". This article tries to reveal the historical roots of the 'Model-Model': how was the question of the diffusion of Italian Renaissance and Baroque culture across Europe rooted in pre- and post-World War II historiography? What were the implicit and explicit assumptions underlying such a project between the 1930s and the 1980s? This leads to a discussion of how such a historical narrative can still be adopted today. Defining then a narrow concept of the "Italian Renaissance as Model", the article sketches what could be a History of the Italian Renaissance as model for and in Europe.

When faced, in 1793, with the prospect of defeat, the National Convention issued an appeal for a levée en masse, which, theoretically, placed the entire population at the disposal of France's war machine. Thus was born the modern idea of the nation in arms. This concept has proved to have an enduring legacy, and has been adapted to suit a wide variety of contexts and time periods. This article explores the birth, development and transmission of the levée en masse. It seeks to understand why the concept survived beyond the 1790s and how it remained a compelling instrument of mass mobilisation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

What is recognized worldwide and under International Law as "military" is ultimately based on the adoption of western organizational concepts. These concepts emerged from the 16th century onward primarily in the territories of western Europe and subsequently also in central Europe. They became the primary model for the continental European and western military organization during the era of Napoleon I. It is therefore all but impossible to discuss this topic from a "non-hegemonic" perspective. Transfer processes manifested themselves in the Ottoman Empire, in Egypt, and on the Indian subcontinent. The experiences of the Second World War increasingly led to the adoption of US forms of organization. While in the early-21st century many of the organizational concepts that have developed since the early modern period are again in a state of upheaval, they continue to define the structural organization of "regular" armies. At the same time, processes of transfer and appropriation from non-European to European military forces still deserve more attention.

As the counterpart to the narrative of European superiority, the fear of Japan and China has had a place in the history of Europe since the 1890s, when the term was adopted from North America. In general, the term "Yellow Peril" has been analysed as a political and social catchphrase. In this essay, I argue instead that three media events played a crucial role in its emergence and gradual intensification: the Sino-Japanese War of 1894/1895, the Boxer War of 1900/1901 and the Russo-Japanese War of 1904/1905. The legacies of these wars cast a long shadow over the 20th century.

This article begins – drawing on research on imaginations of the Balkans – with a critical discussion of the representation of the Balkans as a border region, as this holds the danger of essentializing the Balkans as at least partially a non-European region. The question should instead be asked whether large regions are not border regions because different networks of interaction and communication overlap in them. The following depiction of the history of the Balkans region from about 1450 to 1950 thematizes on the one hand the integration of the region into broad contexts of interconnection (e.g. imperial contexts), and on the other hand the establishment of (new) borders in the Balkans and the societal consequences of these. A longue durée factor in the history of the Balkans was the central importance of external factors for historical developments in the region.

During the mid-13th century Europeans learned how to make gunpowder. Over the next three centuries, Europeans developed military and naval technologies along with new tactics, techniques, fortifications, and vessels that changed the character of war in Europe. This process was more evolutionary than revolutionary, but it nonetheless had consequences on the social order, on the nature of the state, and on Europe's relationship with the rest of the world.

The Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) became a media phenomenon, manifesting itself in different ways depending on the functions of the age's various media types. Newspapers, informative pamphlets and (usually schematic) visual representations served chiefly to provide information about facts and events, although "small," non-essential incidents were also covered. The task of Messrelationen and synthetic, regularly appearing accounts was to put the events in order but also to interpret them; the boundary separating them from propaganda was fluid. Pamphlets provided a space for discussions about the causes of war, its actual object, and the possible courses of action open to the governments, including the question of alliances. Naturally, advice shifted with the development of the war. Some media, for example medals and illustrated broadsheets, construed the war synthetically and allegorically.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, hundreds of thousands of Muslims migrated from the Balkans into other regions, above all the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey, founded in 1923. The exodus took place in various forms: violent expulsion, flight, treaty-regulated emigration, population exchange with Christians and more or less "voluntary" migration. Many of these population movements and displacements in Southeast Europe have occurred in the last decades of the 19th and throughout the 20th century – periods when multinational empires fell apart and the political ideology of nationalism was on the rise. During the wars between the Ottoman Empire and the newly born nation states the region witnessed a large number of episodes of interethnic violence and various forms of forced population movements. Notions of national homogeneity which held sway in most of the incipient nation states in the Balkans, and which were often enforced by violent means, caused Muslims to be considered undesirable or hostile minorities that the nationalist regimes sought to get rid of. The immigration had far-reaching social and political consequences for the Ottoman Empire and Turkey.

The term "Reich" is found in a variety of European languages and has several applications in German. "Das Reich" is different, however, and it derives its suggestive force from a combination of secular and religious sources. This German "Reich" – or the Altes "Reich" as it is commonly referred to by modern historians in order to distinguish it from the German "Reich" of 1871 – played a central role in European history from the Middle Ages until its dissolution in 1806. Thereafter its legacy periodically continued to inspire and preoccupy groups of all political persuasions into the late 20th century.

This article deals with developments leading up to, the unfolding of and the outcome of the Greek War of Independence which began in 1821, while focusing in particular on the international dimension of the conflict. Just as diaspora communities in western and central Europe who had been influenced by the French Revolution of 1789 had played a central role in the emergence of the Greek nationalist movement, the insurrection itself also quickly became an international media event throughout Europe. It was the European great powers who ultimately rescued the rebellion (which was hopelessly divided and which had actually failed militarily) through largescale intervention and who put the seal on Greek sovereignty in 1830/32. The emergence of Greece as a European project between great power politics and philhellenism had a profound effect on the further development of the country.

This article discusses concepts and realities of "borders" in early modern Europe. It outlines the basic shifts in the relevant terminology with particular emphasis on juridical and political discourses. It focuses on the relative importance of zonal and linear notions of borders, as well as on the growing significance of the natural environment in contemporary thought on the topic. The issue of inter-state relations, in particular as regards the Ottoman Empire, is used to illustrate the political relevance of changing concepts of borders.

Pan-Turkism is the name given to the idea of uniting all Turkic-speaking peoples of the Caucasus, the Volga-Ural region, the Crimea, Western and Central Asia under the aegis of a greater Turkish state. According to Pan-Turkist advocates, Turkic peoples have certain characteristics in common, such as related languages, a supposedly common descent and common history, and cultural traditions. Pan-Turkism was inspired by linguistic, ethnolinguistic and racial research in European Oriental Studies in the 19th century. The "scientific" foundations of Pan-Turkism, which are rejected today, go back to contemporaneous "Turan research". The terms Pan-Turkism and Turanism were often used synonymously in the beginning, although the geographical reach of the latter was greater. Pan-Turkism appeared among the Turkic peoples in the Russian Empire, especially in the Volga-Ural region, in conjunction with a "national awakening". Around 1900, Pan-Turkism also developed in the Ottoman Empire into a political independence movement.

The artist journey to the Orient was a successor to the European Grand Tour. It can also be seen as an expansion of the Tour to territories beyond known parts of Europe and hitherto canonized places of interest. The earliest artist journeys to the Orient brought a rich stock of images to Europe. One such journey was undertaken by the Frenchman Louis-François Cassas, whose "Voyage pittoresque" sketches an "archaeological portrait" of the Orient that was authoritative for the Enlightenment's "image" of the region. One of its successors was Napoleon's Egyptian expedition of 1798/1799, the result of which was the work "Description de l'Égypte" (in over twenty volumes). The aspiration of this "image collection" to make a comprehensive and complete record of the country indicates a new character of travel – one related to science, colonialism, and the work of the draughtsman.

In historical studies, the Black Sea region is viewed as a separate historical region which has been shaped in particular by vast migration and acculturation processes. Another prominent feature of the region's history is the great diversity of religions and cultures which existed there up to the 20th century. The region is understood as a complex interwoven entity. This article focuses on the northern Black Sea region, which in the present day is primarily inhabited by Slavic people. Most of this region currently belongs to Ukraine, which has been an independent state since 1991. It consists primarily of the former imperial Russian administrative province of Novorossiia (not including Bessarabia, which for a time was administered as part of Novorossiia) and the Crimean Peninsula, including the adjoining areas to the north. The article also discusses how the region, which has been inhabited by Scythians, Sarmatians, Greeks, Romans, Goths, Huns, Khazars, Italians, Tatars, East Slavs and others, fitted into broader geographical and political contexts.

Contained after 1700, the Ottoman threat to Europe evolved into an Austro-Russian-Ottoman struggle for hegemony over the remaining frontiers of the Danube, the Crimea and the Caucasus. The era from 1700 to 1900 is generally described as one of profound transformation of the Ottoman military system by adopting European organizational and technological models. Based on a critique of current theoretical models, this article argues that the notion of the transfer of military technology is better expressed as a cultural conversation. We still have very few specific details about military reform within the empire, and those responsible for it. Much of the post-1700 European imagination about the Ottoman potential for reform was inspired by literary, sometime derisive narratives. Both observations will be discussed in relation to the nature and deployment of our sources.

Historically, "population" has been an indispensable and ostensibly unambiguous concept – "population" encompasses the inhabitants of a specific territory at a particular moment in time and thus offers empirical information on the condition of an entity, be it political, cultural or otherwise defined. But how is the respective territory defined? Do the people who are being counted populate a nation-state, an overseas colony or Europe as whole? Are all the individuals who live in the selected territory being counted? Are there differences in the way individual population groups are evaluated? And how are the figures calculated? Are the people counted, estimated, visited or written to? What assumptions regarding the composition of the population are contained in the census and how do the results affect population policies? All these questions must be taken into consideration when describing the development of the concept of population in European history. After a brief historical overview of demographic population development and its academic methods, the article addresses the differing constructions of the concept "population" in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. Finally, the article will explore the question of whether it is possible to write a genuinely European history of the idea of "population".

Antiquity has served as a model for modern times in many ways, in art and architecture as well as in science, scholarship, and politics. Yet antiquity is not a clear-cut entity, no fact in itself, but rather a cultural code – one that admits of myriad applications and whose meaning and functions can only be understood within the specific settings in which it has been appropriated. It is possible to identify certain cycles and developments in the way antiquity has been reformulated that are bound up with nuclei of tradition, but these have themselves produced accretions that have in turn influenced subsequent uses of the model of antiquity. Instead of a simple process of reception, it makes more sense to speak of complex and dynamic adaptations and appropriations along the lines of cultural transfer. This can be seen equally well in both republican discourses and the various forms of monarchical representation, as well as in more recent attempts at "empire"-building.
