Standing in a long tradition, the opening page of this pamphlet depicts the Societas Jesu as a conspiracy, referring to an attempt to kill Joseph I of Portugal (1713–1777) on September 3, 1758, which is the "évènement" ("event") in the title. The text (which is part of a pamphlet volume entitled on the spine Jésuites / Voleurs / Parricide, i.e. "Jesuits / Thieves / Parricide") presents many Jesuit authors as systematically defending regicide as a political instrument. Their order was suppressed in Portugal in 1759.
