Albrecht von Eyb (1420–1475), canon of Eichstätt cathedral, made it his aim, after spending 14 years in Italy, to promote the art of rhetoric in Germany. For his translations of Plautus included in Spiegel der Sitten (1474), he followed the principle of not translating a text word for word but according to the sense, making it easy to understand in the target language.
