As this campaign poster, produced by the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) for elections in the German state of Hesse in 1946, shows, the term "Abendland" was used in political debates in the nascent Federal Republic as a means of distinction from the communist Eastern Bloc. The map shows that the "community of the Christian West" ends in the middle of Europe.
