The Cathedral of the Assumption (Uspensky Sobor) was built in the city of Vladimir in the 12th century by master builders from Byzantium. Vladimir was an important centre of power during the period of the Rus' and was the seat of the Metropolitan of the Russian Orthodox Church for a period.
