In the 1960s, the EEC attracted more American investment than any other region of the earth. It seemed more advantageous to develop production facilities locally rather than export to this market, not least due to the EEC's initially high external tariffs. In 1961, the news magazine DER SPIEGEL used its title page to address the omnipresence of American investors in Europe.
