This cartoon depicts Captain Alfred Dreyfus (1859–1935) seeking to defend himself against an attack by France, personified here by an aggressive Marianne wearing a Phrygian cap. The dialogue below the image conveys their exchange:

Dreyfus: "Mon Dieu, que faites vous? Je ne suis pas celui que vous croyez." ("My god, what are you doing? I am not the one you take me for.")

La France: "Excusez-moi, Monsieur. Mais parmi tant d'infidiels on ne s'y reconnait plus." ("Excuse me, sir. But among so many infidels it is hard to recognise one's own kind.")
