In his lecture "Ueber die verschiedenen Methoden des Uebersetzens" ("On the different methods of translating") given on 24th June 1813 in the Royal Academy of Sciences in Berlin, Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher (1768–1834) named two possible maxims of translation: "Either the translator leaves the author in peace, as much as possible, and moves the reader towards him; or he leaves the reader in peace, as much as possible, and moves the author towards him".
