Globe Theatre in Neuss, Germany

The original Globe Theatre in London became famous for housing the first performances of William Shakespeare’s (1564–1616) plays. In fact, Shakespeare was a member of the theatre company The Lord Chamberlain’s Men who built it in 1599. Due to regulations of the Puritan government, the theatre was closed and then destroyed around 1644. Today, it has not only been rebuilt in London, but also in other places, such as the German town Rheda-Wiedenbrück, where a copy was built in 1988 which was moved to the town of Neuss in 1991. This modern Globe Theatre now houses an annual Shakespeare festival.
