The cartoon "La tache" ("the stain"), published in 1904, depicts Esterhazy's face against the outline of France. He is holding a scroll inscribed with the words "J'avoue être l'auteur de Bordereau" ("I confess to being the author of the bordereau"), signed Esterhazy.
