Mao Zedong (1893–1976), Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party (1943-1976), President of the People’s Republic of China (1954-1959). Though venerated as the founder of modern China, his legacy also includes millions killed in the pursuit of such projects as the “Great Leap Forward” (1958–1961) and the “Cultural Revolution” (1966–1976).
