Adam Olearius (1603–1671) was a scholar, teacher and writer who assisted the diplomatic mission of Duke Friedrich III of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp (1597–1659) as an interpreter during its journey to Russia and Persia. His work entitled Offt begehrte Beschreibung der Newen Orientalischen Reise (Popular Description of the Recent Oriental Journey) of 1647 established the genre of the scientific travel account.
