Otto von Habsburg, son of the last emperor of Austria-Hungary and head of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine from 1930 to 2006, was a lifelong proponent of the European idea. This photograph shows him in 1991, in his capacity as the president of the Paneuropean Union, at the award of the Coudenhove-Kalergi-Prize to Helmut Kohl. The German chancellor was honoured for his "surpassing achievements in European politics, the successful reunification of Germany, and as a motor of European unification". The Paneuropean Union continues to campaign for a united Europe founded on Christian and "occidental" (abendländisch) values.
