St. Petersburg was designed from scratch as a capital city after the example of Versailles. During the building of Peterhof, Peter drew on French examples particularly in the area of garden design and interior design, and he brought an array of specialists to Russia to this end, with Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond, a student of André Le Nôtre, foremost among them.
