This painting by the Polish painter Jan Matejko (1838–1893) depicts the Polish king Casimir III (1310–1370). It is one of a series of portraits that Matejko made of Polish kings, especially from the Middle Ages. Matejko's history painting was particularly influenced by the third partition of Poland in 1795. The glorifying depiction of Polish history in his paintings served as a way of preserving the country's national identity and Polish patriotism.
