The writer Sophie von La Roche (1731–1807), née Gutermann von Gutershofen, married Georg Michael Frank von La Roche (1720–1788), the privy counsellor of the Electorate of Mainz, after a dissolved engagement to Christoph Martin Wieland (1733–1813). Her short stories and epistolary novels (for example, Geschichte des Fräuleins von Sternheim, 2 vols, 1771) emulated the styles of Samuel Richardson, Jean-Jacques Rousseau und Oliver Goldsmith. She recorded her journey to Holland and England in 1786 in a travelogue (Tagebuch einer Reise durch Holland und England, 1788).
