This article describes in outline the main structures and developments in the foreign trade and general economic activity of Europeans from the beginning of the early modern period (ca. 1450) up to 2000. On the one hand, particular emphasis is placed on the diverse connections between the two economic fields of activity of "trade" and "economic activity" generally. On the other hand, there is a focus on the trade connections between Europe and the rest of the world, as well as on forms of transfer which go beyond these links, in order to investigate the extent to which trade and cultural transfer influenced and perhaps even transformed the economy of Europe and the non-European regions interacting with Europe.
