Printed Catechisms have been durable and persistent media of religious transfer. The reformation era brought them to particular prominence. Luther's Small Catechism set a standard, in terms of content and appeal. Other prominent catechisms, including the Heidelberg Catechism, the Westminster Shorter Catechism, and Canisius' catechism, sought to express their theological insights in language as simple, clear, compelling and memorable as Luther's. Catechisms have been one of the popular forms of religious literature in Europe. The most prominent were often translated and were sometimes supplemented or edited when moved to new contexts.
