Anacharsis Cloots (1755–1794) (born Johann Baptist Hermann Maria Baron de Cloots, in French: Jean Baptiste Baron de Cloots du Val-de-Grâce) was born at Gnadenthal Castle in Donsbrüggen near Cleves. He moved to Paris at the age of 20 and became known as a writer, politician and revolutionary of the French Revolution. A prominent advocate of the universal validity of human rights, he proclaimed himself as "ambassador of human kind" during the Fête de la Fédération of 14 July 1790. As a foreigner in exile, he was falsely accused as a spy after 1793 and guillotined in public on 24 March 1794.
