This painting by Carl Haag (1820–1915) depicts an Armatole, an irregular combatant from the mountain regions of central Greece. The Armatoloi were originally Christian militiamen charged by the Ottomans with securing this difficult terrain, but then took part in the wars of liberation on the rebel side.
