At the suggestion of its long-standing chairman Rudolf Virchow (1821–1902), the Berliner Gesellschaft für Anthropologie, Ethnologie und Urgeschichte, founded in 1869, also conducted anthropological studies of 'Völkerschau' participants such as those from the carny troops of Carl Hagenbeck (1844–1913). Members of the society are seen here on a trip to Weisdin near Neustrelitz.
