The imperial summer palace in Chengde is one of the most outstanding examples of Chinese garden art. On the list of cultural relics of the People's Republic of China since 1961, the site consists of mountains, lakes and forests, covering a total area of 5.6 km². Emperor Kangxi (1654–1722) had the residence built in 1703, with the last expansion in 1790.
