Charles-Martial-Allemand Lavigerie (1825–1892)

This black-and-white portrait of Charles-Martial-Allemand Lavigerie (1825–1892), later Archbishop of Algiers and Cardinal, was painted in Paris in the 1860s. In 1868, Lavigerie founded the "Society of Missionaries of Africa" (Société des missionaires d'Afrique), also called the "White Fathers,” for the mission in Africa. His commitment to fighting slavery and the slave trade in Africa led to the founding of several anti-slavery societies.
