Frances Elizabeth Caroline Willard (1839–1898) attended Evanston College for Ladies in Illinois and, with the support of her parents, enjoyed training as a teacher. She later became head of the Northwestern Female College. Willard was president of the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union from 1879 to 1898 and founded the World's Woman Christian Temperance Union. Willard was also influential in the founding of the National Council of Women of the United States and was its first president.
