This painting depicts Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763–1814), who as the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821) was crowned Empress of France in 1804, in her coronation gown. Her right hand is lying on her ermine-lined robe, which is draped over the armrest of the throne and the steps of the podium.
