The first streetcars were pulled by horses in the early 19th century, until finally the steam railway and, above all, the electric railway replaced horse-drawn streetcars. The image shows the Eschersheimer Lokalbahn, which ran in Frankfurt am Main between Heddernheim and the Eschenheimer Tor. In 1888, it became the first railway in Frankfurt to be steam-powered. By 1908, it had been fully converted to electrically operated streetcars.
