Friedrich List (1789–1846) was a German economist who was an integral and important theorist of the school of national economics which reacted against British domination of the world economy by the means of free trade. List argued that protective tariffs were necessary to nurture and encourage the growth of domestic industries which were essential to the growth of the nation. While his views had particular relevance to Germany, List's theories proved to be influential throughout Europe, and especially in the United States.
