The grotto at Lourdes was the scene of several Marian apparitions in 1858. In 1864, a statue (upper right corner of the picture) was erected on the spot where Mary appeared to 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous, according to her depiction. In the following years, Lourdes developed into a place of pilgrimage that has attracted millions of pilgrims, including many who are sick. They hope that the spring water of the cave will heal them as a miraculous cure.
