The black-and-white photograph shows a horse-drawn streetcar on the Munich Ring Line in 1900. Horse-drawn streetcars are considered the forerunners of today's streetcars. Their carriages, which often still resembled traditional carriages, were pulled by horses over rails. There were rarely fixed stops; instead, passengers could jump on and off during the journey. The last German horse-drawn streetcar operated on the island of Spiekeroog until 1949.
