The monument in Münster commemorates the "Kiepenkerle," traveling merchants who moved between the Sauerland and Hamburg, bringing provisions such as eggs, dairy products and poultry to the cities. At the same time, they supplied the rural areas with salt and news, among other things. The name derives from the basket, the so-called "Kiepe," in which the merchants transported their goods on their backs.
