This photograph from 1896 shows the Panathinaiko Stadium on the outskirts of Athens. It was built on the foundations of the ancient stadium, which was the venue for the 1870 and 1875 Olympic Games shortly after it was excavated. For the first modern Olympic Games, organized by the International Olympic Committee in 1896, the stadium was completely renovated and partially rebuilt.
