Panoramic View of the Island of Ithaca
Otto Magnus von Stackelberg was an Estonian archaeologist who, at the beginning of the 19th century, undertook extended journeys to Greece, where he participated in excavations at a number of ancient sites. He published a book on the excavations at the Temple of Apollo at Bassae, which constituted the high point of archaeological research in that period. However, he also made sketches depicting rural Greece. This is a panoramic view of the island of Ithaca famed in Homer's Odyssey.
