Philipp Melanchthon (Philipp Schwartzerdt) was a German theologian and humanist and, besides Martin Luther (1483–1546), one of the leading figures of the Reformation. He was the main contributor to the Confessio Augustana, the primary Lutheran confession of faith, which was presented to the emperor Charles V (1519–1556) at the Diet of Augsburg in 1530.
