The large and visually stunning village church of Tuntenhausen (near Rosenheim in the German region of Upper Bavaria) has been a pilgrimage destination since the late Middle Ages and today is a papal basilica minor. The Marian statue venerated by pilgrims stands at the center of the main altar. After several fires and due to a growing influx of pilgrims, the church was rebuilt and remodeled in typical Baroque style during the first half of the 17th century under Duke (later Elector) Maximilian I, who strongly supported the Counter-Reformation in Bavaria.
