The painting by the French painter Eugène Boudin (1824–1898) shows a scene on the beach of the Norman seaside resort of Dieppe. While some bathers have settled down in chairs and seem engrossed in conversation, others stand gazing out to sea. Boudin specialized in beach scenes like these throughout his career, as they enjoyed great popularity and ensured a steady demand for the artist.
