Sánchez Coello's portrait of the Infante Don Carlos, who died in 1568 under mysterious circumstances, illustrates the key elements of Spanish court fashion well: A stiff doublet with high collar and ruff, the short padded hose called "bombasted" because of its voluminous form, tightly fitting silk stockings, heelless shoes and a short Spanish gown.
