Over 100 years after the Lisbon earthquake, the event was still part of Europe's collective consciousness. The artist Yan Dargent (1824–1899) produced this illustration in 1183 for the book Histoire des météores et des grands phénomènes de la nature by Jean Rambosson (1827–1886). The ruins of the town show the magnitude of the disaster, which the figures clambering about the rubble underscore.
