Peter Martyr Vermigli was a significant Florentine Reformed theologian, who after his flight from Italy journeyed throughout Europe, spending time in Zurich, Basel, Strasbourg, and Oxford. He consistently advocated for an understanding of ecclesiastical discipline as a "mark of the church" (nota ecclesiae).
